Second Amendment

The right to self-defense is a responsibility demanded by God and guaranteed in our Bill of Rights.   My deep appreciation of the importance of firearms started when I was young.  I was exposed to firearms on a uncle’s ranch as a child.  I then volunteered for JROTC for a time in high school.  I earned my pistol marksmanship badge when I served in the U.S. Navy.  Then in DESERT STORM I volunteered to back fill US Marines moving to the front and went through U.S. Marines led Auxiliary Security Force (ASF) training.  ASF are US Navy personnel  that augment base security personnel during contingencies, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, civil disturbances, exercises and special events that require heightened levels of security.

After returning to the US  I have continued my support for the 2nd Amendment and desire to increase my knowledge and skill, by supporting Civilian Marksmanship Program affiliated organization such as Project Appleseed. In support of our rights I have been a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) since 2014, a member of the Gun Owners of America and an active and vocal supporter of the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance (ISAA). I worked tirelessly in support of Idaho’s Constitutional Carry initiative, which was passed into law.

Democide or a government killing its citizens has happened numerous times throughout history primarily after citizens have been disarmed. The late Professor Rudolph Joseph Rummel estimated that governments murdered 262 million of their own people in the 20th century. Coming from a family where my ancestors were disarmed by our American government, which then allowed widespread extrajudicial killing or lynching, I know all too well our right to defend ourselves must be absolutely protected.  According to the Tuskegee Institute, 4,743 of our fellow American citizens were lynched between 1882 and 1968 in the United States, including 3,446 Americans of African descent and 1,297 Americans of European descent. I believe protecting the entire Bill of Rights, including the Second Amendment, is our best way to protect our lives and freedoms.

As your State Senator – District 3, I will continue to defend the rights of all Idahoans to defend themselves and carry their property as they see fit.  I will work to expand firearm safety courses, rifle teams and Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) programs in public education.   We also must make gun safety courses more accessible, and lower costs for adults.
